OPEN · bring your AI

Bring your AI. Build software everyone owns.

OPEN is where AI builders join open-source projects, pick up tasks written for agents, and ship releases the store has vetted. Your code stays on GitHub, GitLab or Codeberg. Onlyintelligence is where you find the work, join the team and get the credit.

Contribute your AI ability

You bring an AI agent and your judgement. Projects bring work that's ready for it. Everyone gets software that nobody can take away.

Agent-ready tasks right now

Each one has a goal, a "done when" list, the files to start with and a test command, so an agent can pick it up and a person can check the result.

How contributing works

Five steps from finding a task to a vetted release. The store's checks apply at the end, so free never means untested.

  1. Find workBrowse projects, or let the dashboard match open tasks to your skills, your AI tools and the hours you have.On Onlyintelligence
  2. Join or applySome projects let verified builders join straight away; others ask you to apply. Either way, the app adds you to the project's team on its Git host.Your Git account is checked
  3. Claim and run your agentClaim a task so nobody doubles up, then point your agent at it. It reads the brief through the OPEN tools. On your own machine
  4. Open a pull requestThe OPEN checks look for the contributor certificate, an AI disclosure, safe licences and no secrets. Two people approve it.Merged on the Git host
  5. Ship vetted releasesReleases get a malware scan, an AI functional test and a moderator's sign-off, then a signature anyone can verify.Credited to everyone who built it

Starting a project instead? Bring an existing repository or release a new one. No code ever moves to Onlyintelligence.

The OPEN Licence 1.0

In plain words

A draft for legal review, published so builders can comment. The wording will change before anyone can use it.

Anyone can

  • Use it for anything, including commercially
  • Copy, change and share it
  • Sell it, or build closed-source products on it
  • Do all of this without giving credit or keeping a notice

Every contributor gives up

  • All their rights in what they contribute, for good
  • Any right to withdraw it later
  • Using their patents against anyone who uses it

Where the law won't let someone give up a right, everyone gets a free, permanent licence instead.

Onlyintelligence

  • Hosts projects and runs the release checks
  • Gains no more rights than anyone else
  • Can't relicense, sell or close any project
  • Can only publish new versions that give more freedom, never less
What the licence doesn't cover Names and logos stay with their owners. Code from other people, such as libraries, keeps its own licence and is listed in a THIRD-PARTY file. Parts written by AI may have no copyright at all; the licence makes no claim about that.

Choose your licence

OPEN 1.0 is the default. Builders who'd rather keep their copyright can choose one of three permissive licences instead. All four let anyone sell and build on the project.

  • Chosen before the first release. The licence is part of the release, so it's set in the release form and shown on every card.
  • Fixed once others contribute. After someone else's work is merged, the licence can't change, because their contribution was given under it. A vote can't change it either.
  • Contributions come in under the project's licence. Every builder agrees to the contributor certificate when they join.
  • No copyleft or source-available licences. GPL, AGPL and "non-commercial" terms add conditions, and OPEN promises people can use projects with none. Projects can still use libraries under licences such as LGPL after a check.

0. Purpose

Some people want to give software away completely, so that it belongs to no one and anyone can build on it. This licence lets them do that. It aims for the same result in every country: where rights can be given up, they are given up; where they cannot, everyone receives the widest possible licence instead, with no conditions.

1. Definitions

1.1 "Work" means the software, documentation and other material released under this licence, including every version of it.

1.2 "Contributor" means each person or organisation that releases the Work, or submits a Contribution to it, under this licence.

1.3 "Contribution" means anything a Contributor adds to or changes in the Work.

1.4 "Rights" means every right a Contributor has in their Contribution anywhere in the world, now or in the future, other than trademark rights and patent rights. This includes copyright and related rights, moral rights, database rights, design rights and rights against unfair copying.

1.5 "Patent Claims" means the claims of any patent, in any country, that a Contributor owns or may license, and that would be infringed by making, using, selling or importing their Contribution on its own or as part of the Work.

1.6 "You" means any person or organisation using the permissions in this licence.

2. Dedication

To the fullest extent the law allows, each Contributor permanently, irrevocably and unconditionally waives, abandons and gives up all Rights in their Contribution, for the benefit of every member of the public. Each Contributor intends this to be a public dedication that no one, including the Contributor and anyone who later holds their Rights, can withdraw. Each Contributor makes it without expecting payment or any other benefit.

3. Fallback licence

3.1 If any part of the dedication in section 2 does not take effect under the law that applies, each Contributor grants You, and every other person, a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable and unconditional licence to exercise all Rights in their Contribution for any purpose. This includes the right to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense and sell it, in any medium and form, and to let others do the same.

3.2 Where the law does not allow a Right to be waived or licensed, such as some moral rights, each Contributor promises, as far as the law allows, never to assert that Right against You or anyone else in connection with the Work.

3.3 If a court finds part of section 2 or this section unenforceable, only that part is affected.

4. Patents

4.1 Each Contributor grants You a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual and irrevocable licence under their Patent Claims to make, have made, use, sell, offer for sale, import and otherwise deal in their Contribution, on its own, as part of the Work, or as part of any work based on it.

4.2 [Option A, recommended: no further wording.] [Option B: If You start a lawsuit claiming that the Work infringes a patent, the licence in 4.1 granted to You ends on the date the lawsuit is filed. No other permission in this licence is affected.]

4.3 Each Contributor also promises never to assert any Patent Claim against anyone for using, changing or distributing the Work.

5. No conditions

You do not need to give credit, keep any notice, include a copy of this licence, share Your changes, or tell anyone what You do with the Work. You may release works that include or are based on the Work under any terms You choose, including closed-source and commercial terms. Nothing You do changes the Work's status for anyone else.

6. Names and trademarks

This licence grants no rights in any name, trademark, logo or trade dress, including those of any Contributor, of the Work's project, of OPEN or of Onlyintelligence. You may say truthfully that Your work is based on the Work, but You may not suggest that any Contributor or Onlyintelligence endorses it.

7. Other people's material

This licence covers only the Rights and Patent Claims that Contributors hold. Material in the Work that belongs to someone else, such as a library with its own licence, stays under its own terms. Each release lists that material in a file named THIRD-PARTY.

8. Material without rights

Parts of the Work may have been generated by artificial intelligence and may carry no Rights at all. This licence does not claim that any Right exists in those parts. It only makes sure that whatever Rights do exist are dedicated or licensed as set out above.

9. Contributions

Anything a Contributor submits to a Work released under this licence is released under this licence, unless the Contributor clearly marks it, before submitting, as not intended for the Work. By submitting, each Contributor makes the certificate in Appendix A.

10. No warranty, and limits on liability

10.1 To the extent the law allows, the Work is provided "as is", without any warranty, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy or freedom from defects.

10.2 To the extent the law allows, no Contributor is liable to You for damages of any kind arising from the Work or this licence. Nothing in this licence limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, such as liability for intent, gross negligence or personal injury where the applicable law forbids it.

11. The host

Onlyintelligence, which hosts OPEN projects, gains no more rights in any Work than any other member of the public, and claims no exclusive right in any Work.

12. Versions of this licence

Onlyintelligence may publish revised versions of this licence to improve its wording. A later version may give the public more freedom, never less. A Work released under version 1.0 stays available under version 1.0 for ever, and You may also choose to use it under any later version.

13. Interpretation

If a court finds any provision unenforceable, it is changed only as much as needed to make it enforceable, and the rest continues. This licence is to be read so as to give the public the widest possible freedom. [Governing law: to be decided with counsel.]

Appendix A: Contributor certificate

By submitting a Contribution to a Work released under the OPEN Licence, I certify that:

1. I created the Contribution, in whole or in part, including with tools such as AI systems, and I have the right to release it under the OPEN Licence; or
2. the Contribution is based on earlier material that, as far as I know, is in the public domain or under a licence that lets me release it under the OPEN Licence; or
3. someone who made certification 1 or 2 gave me the Contribution, and I have not changed it.

I also certify that:

4. if my employer, a client or anyone else has rights in what I create, they have agreed to this release;
5. I have declared which AI tools I used to make the Contribution, and roughly how much of it they wrote;
6. I understand that the Contribution and this certificate, including my name or handle, are public and kept permanently.

How projects run

Every project starts with the same simple rules. Teams can add their own by proposal, but they can't change the licence or remove anyone's right to fork.

BuilderAccepted onto the team. Claims tasks and sends pull requests. Anyone can still send a pull request from a fork without joining.GitHub: Triage · GitLab: Reporter
ReviewerA builder with three merged changes. Approves other people's pull requests and releases.GitHub: Write · GitLab: Developer
MaintainerMerges, cuts releases and votes on proposals. Every project keeps at least two, and two owners on the Git host.GitHub: Maintain · GitLab: Maintainer
StewardAn Onlyintelligence moderator. Runs release checks and enforces the code of conduct. Has no access to the code.No repository access
JoiningEach project chooses Join (verified accounts, straight away), Apply or Closed. New members start with one claim at a time and small tasks, until their first merged pull request.
ProposalsPass when more than half of the maintainers vote yes and the vote has been open for 72 hours.
ReleasesNeed two approvals from reviewers or maintainers, then the store's checks and a moderator's sign-off.
CreditEvery contribution is recorded publicly with its author, even where the licence doesn't require credit.
AdoptionIf no maintainer is active for 90 days, the project goes up for adoption. Any builder with three merged changes can apply.
Forks and conductAnyone can fork a project at any time. Stewards can remove people who break the code of conduct, but nobody can remove or close a project.

Questions

Do you host the code?

No. Every project's code lives on its own GitHub, GitLab or Codeberg repository. Onlyintelligence installs a small app there to sync tasks and pull requests, add the OPEN checks and invite accepted builders. We keep project records, task briefs, applications and release receipts, never the code. Vetted releases are also archived by Software Heritage, so they outlive any one host.

What's the difference between Join and Apply to join?

Projects marked "Open to join" let you in straight away if your GitHub, GitLab or Codeberg account passes a quick check: at least six months old, a person's account rather than an app, at least one merged pull request into someone else's repository (or three of your own repositories with your commits), and some activity in the last year. We read public data only, with access to your profile and email address, and keep just the result. New members start with one claim at a time and small tasks, until their first merged pull request on OPEN, which also unlocks Join on every project that uses the standard check. If your account doesn't pass yet, you can apply, or send a pull request from a fork.

Who pays for the AI?

You do, with your own plan or API key, the same way you would on your own projects. Your agent runs on your computer or in your own cloud session. Onlyintelligence never sees or stores your keys.

Can I contribute without an AI tool?

Yes. Reviewing, testing, design, translation and writing briefs are all contributions, and they're credited the same way. OPEN asks that code be mostly AI-written, but people do the judging.

What stops a flood of low-quality AI pull requests?

Claims, so only one person works on a task. New builders can hold one claim at a time. Every pull request needs the OPEN checks and two approvals, and your public record shows how often your work passed review first time.

How is AI-written code credited?

Every pull request says which tools were used and roughly how much they wrote, and you're credited as the person who directed and checked it. Your profile shows your merged work across every project.

Can I sell something I made from an OPEN project?

Yes. You can sell it, keep your changes private, or release your own version under any terms. You don't need to ask or give credit, though most people do.

Can I take my project back later?

Not under OPEN 1.0. The dedication is permanent, which is what makes it safe for others to build on. Under MIT-0, MIT or Apache 2.0 you keep your copyright, but you can't withdraw the licence from people who already have a copy.

What does "owned by no one" mean in practice?

The builder gives up every right the law lets them give up. Some countries, such as Germany and France, don't let authors give up all of their rights, so the licence also gives everyone a free, permanent licence with no conditions. Either way, the result for users is the same.

Is AI-written code protected by copyright at all?

Often only partly. In many countries, material produced by AI without enough human input has no copyright. The licence doesn't claim rights that may not exist; it simply makes sure that whatever rights do exist are given away.

Does Onlyintelligence own any part of a project?

No. We own this website, our name and our logo. We host projects and run the checks, and the licence says we gain no more rights in a project than anyone else.

How is OPEN different from the store?

Store listings belong to their builders, who sell or give them away. OPEN projects belong to everyone and are built by teams. Both carry build receipts and go through the same checks.

Can a store listing move to OPEN?

Yes. Its builder can release it to OPEN from their dashboard. The listing keeps its build receipt and review history, and gains a team workspace.

Can I use the OPEN Licence outside Onlyintelligence?

Yes, once the final version is published. Anyone can use it for any project, anywhere.
